20 Shittiest Anime of the Decade (2000-2009)

I’ve seen me lots of animu in the last decade. I started watching this stuff in late 2001, and it’s ruined my life ever since. That being said, I felt it was my obligation to impart upon you the fact that there are terrible anime out there. Sometimes it seems like it’s all moeblobs and slice of life bullshit. I’m not sure if anyone else has done this yet, so I’m giving you my list of the 20 Most Shittiest Anime of 2000’s. Keep in mind that even though I have ranked these, they are all equally shitty. My list probably won’t sit well with the slice of life fans or the moe-loving fapboys, but rest assured these anime all need to be sent directly to hell.

Dishonorable Mention) Most Pointless AwardRebuild of Evangelion – Why Hideaki Anno, why? You impressed us with Gunbuster, you further solidified your directing talent with Nadia, and you amazed us with your opus Evangelion. After that you did… well, not really anything. You went on to make a bunch of really shitty live action movies. You failed and failed and failed. You weren’t able to succeed in the mainstream, and that’s OK. But when you returned to the world of anime, what did you do? You decided to make A MOTHERFUCKING REMAKE of your biggest cash cow. Hmmm. Out of ideas already? Apparently so. Either that, or you wasted all of your money on full body Asuka pillows and mosaic screened Japanese porn. Now, I will agree that Rebuild of Evangelion was extremely well made, but it was also extremely pointless. Evangelion was by far one of the most incredible anime of all time. And remaking it is retarded at best.

Dishonorable Mention) Worst Director AwardMamoru Oshii – To all the fans of Oshii… fuck you. This guy is terrible. He’s a horrible director. He has no concept of pacing or intriguing storytelling. There is an old writer’s guideline that says, “Show, don’t tell.” Basically, it means you should describe what’s going on, and not just say that it happened. It provides for a much richer experience for the reader. Oshii’s work is all flawed by the same problem. He “tells” and doesn’t “show.” He wants to bring up philosophical ideas, and his method of doing that is by having two talking heads spout off paragraphs of dialogue at each other for huge chunks of time. This could potentially work in a book format, but in film, which is a visual medium, it fails miserably. Immediately, this becomes boring to all but the most insane Oshii-loving otaku. I swear to god, Oshii fans are practically a cult. To them, Oshii is like Jesus and he can do no wrong. He could film himself taking a shit, and his fans would call it the greatest piece of cinema to ever grace the earth. The truth is, 99% of everything he has put to the screen is garbage. Oh, and Oshii, nobody gives a fuck about Basset Hounds, so stop putting them in all your goddamn movies.

20.) Death Note (2006) – What started out as a great series, quickly degraded into a huge piece of crap. I thought it was brilliant making the villain the main character. And for a while, it was incredible watching him outwit his enemies time and time again. There was something engaging and fun about rooting for the bad guy. It was different. But then, after the first story arc concluded, it devolved from a near perfect anime specimen to a near perfect anime piece of shit. The genius main character became an idiot, the people who caught him were a bunch of annoying little kids, they only won by pure luck, and even the plot made no sense. The good guys don’t always have to win. If this show had the balls to let the villain win, it would have been unforgettable. However, the ending was completely idiotic and totally out of character with everything that had occurred up until that point. If they had stopped at episode 25, this might have made the top 20 anime of the decade list. However, every episode past that point drove it farther and farther down into the trash can of shitty anime that should be forgotten. LEARN TO SWIM!

19.) RahXephon (2002) – Don’t let fans of this series fool you, it really is a huge rip off of Evangelion. While it’s true that Evangelion borrowed a lot from other shows, it was able to combine all of those elements into something fresh, and it had something new to say. In fact, it redefined the giant robot genre. RahXephon, however, is just a scam artist. It looks pretty, but has nothing of substance to offer. Instead of borrowing and integrating, it just steals. Even small things like the female bodyguard having purple hair, and a plethora of shots, are duplicated exactly. It also has a huge, boring cast. The pace really drags, and it is not fun to watch at all. It’s a lame, cheap imitation of a good anime. It’s like if Evangelion is the restaurant Qdoba, then RahXephon is Del Taco.

18.) Black Lagoon (2006) – Wow, what a piece of shit this thing is. With all the tits and firearms, it looks like it should be awesome. But looks can be deceiving. While it appears to be a slam-bang action adventure, it actually is nothing like that at all. Mostly, the characters are completely 2-dimensional, and stand around spouting bullshit from Philosophy 101. There might be a 30 second shootout, with the main characters blasting away at bad guys who stand still, just waiting to get gunned down. The animation is incredibly stiff, and the design is uninspiring. There is no character development, except that the main guy picks up smoking at the end. (It means that he became cool.) Black Lagoon is like that kid in school who tells everyone he is cool and tries really hard, but makes himself look like an idiot in the end. There is nothing cool about this overrated piece of shit. Its only redeeming quality is some really amazing Engrish. “That purase has more badassu maddafaakas zan supermax spaceland.”

17.) Azumanga Daioh (2002) – Wow, what a racist piece of shit. There’s a stereotype that all Japanese people are xenophobic toward foreigners. It probably used to be a lot more true back in the day than it is now. (When I was in Japan I got nothing but warmth from everyone there.) However, watching this series would make you think otherwise. Every chance they get, they take digs at all non-Japanese people, especially Americans. Now, that doesn’t necessarily make this a bad series, but it sure doesn’t help matters. Weeaboos, wishing they were Japanese, have no problem with this racism, or they don’t even notice it at all. (For example, the English teacher who can’t speak English at all and acts like a monkey when interacting with an American tourist.) Racism can be funny if done well. A show like South Park manages to make racist jokes while offering some kind of social commentary. This series, however, just makes racist jokes with the sole purpose of being racist. It adds nothing to the series whatsoever. It’s a piece of shit. Also, Osaka is a stupid, annoying bitch, and she isn’t cute at all.

16.) Ghost Hound (2007) – I really wanted this series to be awesome. It had quite the pedigree as it was Production I.G.’s 20th anniversary series. That being said, I gave it a lot of leeway. However, it just fails to deliver in almost every area. The character designs are laughably cartoonish, and horribly clash against the realistic backgrounds. The story drops hints so seldomly, and so slowly, that it becomes irritating as you watch and watch and watch and wait for something, anything to happen. The story was told in 22 episodes, but it probably could have been told in 10. Stretching it out that long for no reason is a clear sign of terrible writing. The terrible pacing is a clear sign of terrible directing. Overall, this series is just terrible.

15.) Blue Gender (2000) – Violence porn. There are so many close-up and repeated shots of exploding, bloody wounds, it quickly becomes ridiculous. Instead of filling the series with plot or characters, they just have shot after shot of dismemberment and geysers of blood. Now, I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to this if the series had something else to offer. But it doesn’t. It’s empty and vacant. Much like actual porn, it has no real story. The anime just serves as a vessel for delivering buckets of blood without having any redeeming qualities otherwise.

14.) .hack//SIGN (2002) – Is anything happening yet? ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz. Is anything happening yet? ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz. Is anything happening yet? ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz.

13.) Planetes (2003) – I have already written a full review of this, so I won’t bore you with the details a second time. But basically, this series is centered around a huge douchebag with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The animation and music are nice, but the characters are so godawful annoying, that it becomes impossible to watch. After 26 episodes you expect some kind of character or plot development, but neither happened in the case of this anime. In fact, the main character regressed and became exactly like his father, which is a person he hated and tried his entire life to avoid becoming. And he is super pumped to be just like his dad in the end. FAIL.

12.) Naruto (2002) – Ugh. All right, seriously, how many episodes are they up to now? You’re kidding, right? No?! Wait, what’s that? There’s a sequel now with them more grown up? Fuck, that sounds terrible. Wait, it’s up to how many episodes now? You’re kidding, righ? No?! Why is the animation quality so terrible? Oh, I see, it got farmed out to Korea. Well, why don’t they make fewer episodes and just concentrate on making them higher quality? Oh, nevermind, that’s a dumb question. The answer, obviously, is: merchandising.

11.) Basilisk (2005) – The “plot” of this series focuses on a war between the two most famous ninja clans in the history of Japan. There is really very little in the way of story, and a whole lot in the way of ridiculous fight scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I love action, in fact, I’m an action junky. But it bugs the hell out of me when the fight scenes involve idiotic super powers (“Watch out my hair is super sharp and will cut you!”  “No, you watch out, I can turn myself into water!”), and even though someone ends up with with a harpoon through their chest, nobody dies. Eventually characters do die, but it takes way too long for it to happen. I don’t understand why the Japanese feel the need to give everybody such ridiculous super powers. It would be way more interesting to watch a realistic version of two ninja clans going against each other.  Anyway, no plot and all (stupid) fight scenes make Basilisk a complete waste of time.

10.) Toward the Terra (2007) – Ugh. Talk about horrible pacing. I’m surprised that Oshii didn’t direct this steaming pile of shit. The first few episodes were good, but it quickly went south after that. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what the hell happened in this series. I do know that a bunch of pretty boys keep rescuing in each other outer space, and use every bit of their strength to resist making out with one another. Other than that, there was something about finding the homeland and using psychic powers. I don’t know. I was too bored by the lack of things happening to pay attention.

9.) Genshiken (2004) – Genshiken is the poor man’s Welcome to the N.H.K. Where the latter show had intriguing characters, a cool story, and was able to lovingly critique otaku culture, the former had none of those things. It claims to be about otaku, but it isn’t. The main character is the girl who hates otaku and anime. Almost every episode is told from her perspective. She cringes at how weird she thinks they are, and she act like a completely spoiled brat. Genshiken trashes the culture that it claims to be professing its love for. All of this was completely unnecessary. We already know how the rest of the non-otaku world views anime. We don’t need to see it again here in our beloved format. That’s why Welcome to the N.H.K. was so good. It allowed the viewer to see criticisms (as well as the insanity) of otaku culture, but do it in such a way that doesn’t make it seem weird and shameful. Genshiken wants you to feel like a outsider for liking anime. Why would you make your anime series about a person who hates anime? She doesn’t even grow to like it. That’s why this series is total crap.

8.) Aria (2005) – ZOMG THEY ARE ALL SO KAWAII SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7.) Air (2005) – ZOMG SHE IS SO KAWAII SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6.) K-ON! (2009) – K-ON! is another entry in the moe slop-bucket of shitty anime. Once again, all the girls are totally cute, and we get to see their adventures of daily life. Nothing much actually happens. We really just have a voyeuristic sensation as we watch the teenage girls. That must be why it is so popular. It can’t be the plot (it doesn’t have one), it can’t be the action (it doesn’t have any), it can’t be the incredible acting (it doesn’t have that), and it can’t be the amazing character growth (it doesn’t have any). If the writers/director/animators had put one tenth of the effort into storytelling that they did into making cute character designs, then this show could have been good. It would be better if it ended like this:

5.) Sky Girls (2007) – Moe? Check. Giant candy apple heads with stick bodies? Check. Are the majority of characters female and super kawaii? Check. Lesbian overtones? Check. No plot? Check. An entire episode based on trying to find a lost Double-D size bra? Check. Sky Girls has really got it all.

4.) Clannad (2007) – Fuck you, Kyoto Animation, fuck you. The same assholes who came up with Air and Kanon also created this huge piece of moe shit. Jesus assraping Christ. How is it even possible that anyone sane could watch this and NOT gouge their eyes out? The story, and I use that term loosely, is the same as in every other tale adapted from a visual novel. Essentially, the girls are soulless husks, designed for only one purpose: fucking. It is your job to trick them enough so that they will let you stick it in. That’s it. I just gave you the entire plot. Oops, spoilers! People who like this drivel should see a psychiatrist. Or be locked up for pedophilia. Or both.

3.) Moe-tan (2007) – Are you fucking kidding me? Just look at that moeblob. The fact that shows like this exist proves there is no god.

2.) Kanon (2006) – DIE!!! UGUUUUUU~ DIE!!!

1.) Lucky Star (2007) – For some reason, the latter half of the decade was plagued with an onslaught of “cute” flat-chested girls who sit around and do nothing. Lucky Star is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the current state of anime. No plot, super moe, unfunny, nothing happens, no action, no character development, and a completely vapid waste of time. Now, I know what you’re going to say, “BUT BRIK THEY ARE TEH UBER CUTE AND ITS JUST A ANIME BESIDES WHATS GOOD IS SUBJECTIVE LOL” Sorry, but you’re wrong. What’s “entertaining” is subjective, but not what’s good. Lucky Star can be entertaining to people who are functionally retarded, but nobody with any standards in storytelling would find it appealing. The latest T-Pain song may entertain you, but you probably wouldn’t say it’s good like something by The Beatles. This is trash anime, the pinnacle of horribleness, the anime version of Satan and Hitler’s child. It only solidified the popularity of the vapid-moe/slice-of-life trend, and for that it deserves the title of shittiest anime of the decade. Plus, its opening song is an audio holocaust.

“Jesus assraping Christ”. 😛 You’re hilarious, Brik.
And, I agree with pretty much all of your opinions here. Thank you for hating moe. I do, too!

I think it was just a missing ‘NOT’ in the title.

The author also forgot to add the rest of the good animes of hte decade.

LOL GREAT LIST! Yeah I stopped watching Naruto after about episode 150ish…it just got way too damn repetitive and like DBZ.

I linked you on my blog btw! And I’m also looking for more writers on my site, I like your style- maybe you’d want to start an Anime section with some full episodes of some classic series? (I was thinking like Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, etc.) Or just check out the posts on my site and see if you’d be interested. I reward all my writers with a free rapidshare premium account every month.

    Anyways, keep up the blogging

There is no way that any of those girls wear a DD bra. What were they planning on doing with it once they found it? Hat? Slingshot? They don’t even need bras their boobs are so tiny.

Man, K-on and Lucky Star are better than your shitty descriptions. Did you run out of snide paragraphs or did you use them on the GOOD anime? I can, however, agree with Naruto. But Rebuild of Eva is great, give it time.

You don’t like K-ON Huh? I’m guessing you went through a lot of slice of life animes and trust me there’s lots and a lot of bad ones too and you chose to put the benchmark of what slice of life should be on the list. K-on is an anime masterpiece believe it or not.

Let’s say for example you don’t like Tom Hanks. You are probably going to write Forest Gump as the worst movie of all time.

Lets say you hate the Simpsons. That’s going to be on your list on 20 worst cartoons of all time.

You probably hate romantic movies and made a list of the shittiest movies ever and put all the critical acclaimed box office hits all on your list of worst movies ever.

Give K-on a second chance if you don’t like it, it’s not the show you just don’t understand or it’s not your cup of tea.

There are a lot of great animes I don’t like and I won’t ever call it bad just not my cup of tea.

Maybe some on your list are legit bad and other not your cup of tea. When I look for anime fans to help me Weed out bad anime so I don’t waste my time, I wouldn’t ask you since your are too bias.

      • May 16, 2019 at 2:47 pm

I really appreciate this comment. This is probably the first comment I’ve ever gotten on this post that was well-reasoned. Maybe I will give K-On another shot. If I ever do, I’ll let you know.

I can agree that Eva deserved to be remade, I mean, how many episods was there? 24? It should have had a lot more than that.

Why did Evangelion and Elfen Lied have so few episodes and pure faggotry such as naruto have so many of them?!?

    • 17 Suigetsu
      August 22, 2013 at 4:36 am

I think actually the fact they have few episodes makes them better in a way. Basically the reason why Naruto and such isn’t that well is because it has so many episodes and fillers ans because the quality isn’t well. On top of it comes the repetitive story. Just end it already. A short anime has less chance of boring you in any ways.

      • August 31, 2013 at 7:40 am

I totally agree. I can hardly stand to watch anything longer than 13 episodes these days. Some shows still have filler episodes at that length. 10 episodes might be the best number for a good series.

Sorry about posting this 3 years later, but Elfen Lied anime is complete garbage. Maybe it’s because i read the manga first, but I can assure you that it is garbage. Too many things were changed and cut out or shortened,It changed how I was the characters. They should have basically called it something else.(Speaking form the point of a guy that does not want to see a different story from the manga, because after all, it is because of the manga I watched the anime)

    well where to begin…
well lets see here you said you hated others because of their rabid fanism but I suggest you take a page from your review of Avatar

Blue Gender “violence porn” but wait you gave a great review to Elfen Lied and I think it had more bloody geisers than Blue Gender did. I think that Blue Gender paved the way for some producer to green light Elfen Lied, I mean the japaniese are ok with using death as a plot device as much as we use it in soap operas.
So why not make a anime series soap opera with a war zone setting 🙂 but that aside I liked both
here is a mind fuck of an episode it was the second anime I ever saw back in 96~98ish right after Akira. try ad-police the first episode of the series is very dated, but the story about someone who kills young prostitute girls on the subway seems like its straight out of a CSI episode and it is what hooked me on anime and I dont see that as a Womans Entertainment Network movie special anytime soon.

most of these anime i’ve heard of and i’ve heard are pretty much crappy, or i’ve actually tried to watch about 10 minutes in and wanted to stab myself in the eye (lucky star). the only anime i do follow and like is k-on, and to be fair, it’s a slice of life anime, so there pretty much isn’t a plot to begin with. it’s like host club/yotsuba/kaichou wa maid-sama/etc. oddly enough though, i did try to watch haruhi and a lot of people compare it to k-on, but i just couldn’t follow that shit at all. it didn’t help that the quality sucked ass. the only reason i did try to watch it is because a lot of girls cosplay from that show…

  16. August 20, 2010 at 9:51 am

Heh, when I quickly saw the top few images I thought: WHAT he has evangelion and Death Note in this list?!

But I read. And I agreed. Death Note is awesome, you just have to stop reading/watching when THAT happens. Everybody who has watched it will know what I mean. I think the manga ends a bit different from the anime thought (I must confess, I haven’t finished the anime after.. yes.. THAT happened. I read the manga anyways, so I knew where to quit and make my own ending..)

And you were talking about the remake of Evangelion. Ok. Then we can still be friends.
Although Evangelion is still.. strange.. and comprehensible, it’s definitely good. Don’t know about the remake yet. I still have to watch it.. but after reading this maybe I should just leave it.

Oh and it’s funny, I come across this post when today I just started watching K-ON (it’s extremely popular here in Japan I guess.. I see that shit everywhere, so I was wondering if it was actually fun or if it only were some cute chars singing cute songs)
I’m not sure if I agree with you or not.. I must agree on the fact that there is NO development whatsoever, but for some reason, it’s pretty entertaining. It’s easy to watch, and there are only 14 eps, so if anybody is bored and doesn’t know what to do on a day, I would suggest to download K-ON and watch it. It will make you laugh at least sometimes. But throw it away when you finished watching it.

But indeed. Good is different than entertaining.

Azumanga, shitty…. You best be trolling, The fact that your reason for considering hating this series solely for the fact that jokes about foreigners which only does it a couple of times. Thats just nit-picking. What you should have put was Elfen lied, now thats a steaming pile of shit of an anime.

  19. August 31, 2010 at 4:14 pm

You see, I want to like you, since you denounce the evils of moeshit. You don’t side with it, you don’t give it a chance, you don’t respect it as people’s taste – you know it’s pure and utter shite, a stain on an entire media form.

And yet in the same post, you also insult Toward the Terra and Ghost Hound. What exactly did these underrated, frankly great shows do to deserve that? I can think of hundreds more that could be on this list, many of them being more cancerous and destructive upon the quality of the anime industry, and just generally CRAP in themselves, than those two. I strongly doubt anyone knew those shows existed until you highlighted them.

    • August 28, 2015 at 8:24 pm

I’m watching Toward the Terra right now, and I totally agree that it doesn’t belong on a ‘Worst’ list. It is a great modernization of a quite frankly rushed and outdated movie. The movie suffered from having good ideas that weren’t fleshed out properly, and the show allows more time to give these characters and ideas a lot more weight to them. It does have some problems, mostly there are way too many timeskips and the CG can get pretty bad at points, but it is a very good, underrated space opera that manages to improve upon a mediocre 80s film that had potential.

ok you know what? a LOT of people LOVE these animes. half the ones ive seen are on this list. like Naruto, Death Note, Ghost Hound, and currently watching Clannad. so shut the elephant up. i know your stating YOUR opinion, but say it in a nicer way that doesnt OFFEND people that are actually FANS of the anime!!!

But i do agree about the ending of Death Note. i also hate how N just pops up out of no where near the end of the series to replace L as a main character.

wow. thats why i dont even watch anime anymore. naruto manga is way better than the anime i couldnt watch more than a few episodes of that. naruto’s voice i was like STFUNARUTO. why do they pick the shittiest voice actors for anime? he sounds like that annoying kid in school who had ADHD that i just wanted to fukn punch in the head for talking to much and having the most annoying sounding voice. btw fuk elfen lied and evangelion original. original evangelion plot was terrible. here how it happened, they made probably one of the best anime plots ive ever had the joy of watching and let it go to shit at the very end, yes they did do that. that fukn ending was probably the worst ive ever seen and idc how unique it was. that ending was so ass retarded i watched it several times to make sure it was actually what was happening. elfen leid can eat a bowl of fuck. last goo anime i saw was darker than black. starts a bit unassuming but it picks up real quick, lots of twists and turns and good ass fukn story and action.

I get why you’d hate most of these but yeah, that Azumanga Daioh’s on here seems kind of nitpicky… There were times when it was racist but I can only think of like two or three, not every episode. And even then, it wasn’t necessarily showing any negative qualities of foreigners, just showing that the characters were afraid of them.

I can’t believe you didn’t mention Naruto’s catch phrase. That has to be one of the most annoying catch phrases I have ever heard everytime he says it a puppy dies.

Personally I liked Death Note and Black Lagoon but I agree with you that Death Note started a lot better than it finished. The rest of them on that list, except Azumanga as I haven’t seen that yet, are just painful. I had trouble getting through the first few episode of planetes, the voice acting was horrid, the story was boring and the characters just annoying.

Finally, someone who agrees with me about Death Note. All my anime watching friends at school think its some incredible revolutionary masterpiece and my response is always “what version of season two have you been watching?”

Keep up the damn good writing.

Definitely have to disagree with several of these.
I dont mind moe in my anime, so shows like Azumanga, Aria, and Air do not bother me. I also liked K-on a bit. Hell I even bought Clannad and Kanon (and Saikano and Rumbling Hearts) because I am probably slightly masochistic, but also because I have enough upbeat shows and sometimes I need to watch a downer. I can see why youd hate these shows, but I dont mind them.

However, I mostly did not agree with the choices of Planetes and Death Note. Sure Death Note was a lot better in the first half, but I still enjoyed it to the end. I definitely think the first detective was better than the second, but he got outsmarted and thats just how it goes sometimes. I like to seethe good guys put on the losing end once in a while. But it doesnt have to end that way.
As for Planetes…this one I really dont understand. The show aims to be fairly realistic to a possible near-future that is believable. The characters of Ai Tanabe and the main character had a lot of growth throughout the show, and I liked to see that. Yes he was a total douchebag at first, but thats part of how his character grew into a much more likeable one towards the end. He realized his dreams and what he could and could not accomplish and he changed for the better.
Also, as far as Genshiken being a Welcome to the NHK clone…it isnt. It isnt even close to the same show. Yes both involve otaku culture, but the Genshiken characters are not NEETS. They openly venture out and do things, even though what they do are typically nerdy and awkward. This is completely different to the main character in NHK who mostly refuses to venture outside or go to school or work. Both deal with Otaku culture, but NHK goes into the psychological aspects of it as opposed to just exploring the culture itself. Genshiken is a more lighthearted show and a parody of Otakus, but NHK is a much much darker show that takes itself much more seriously. Both are good at what they were trying to do.

I just wanted to say three things:

    1. I admit that I rolled my eyes through the first 13 episodes of Clannad and I had to switch to dub around episode 5 because it bored me, but After Story made me cry and I’m a straight guy. I have to respect an anime that pulls that off.

    2. Even though I sometimes disagree with you, it really doesn’t matter cause you so Damn funny.

    3. Brik did you know that you are the Zero Punctuation of anime. If you don’t know what I mean you need to check this guy out. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation

Good list. There are some shows on it that I like and some that I consider bad but not truly “worst” material, but the core composition of the list is something I can get behind.

And I don’t even hate “moe”. (Mainly because the terms is so subjective that it makes it impossible.) The concept of cute girls sitting around and doing nothing doesn’t bother me. (I’ll admit I like Azumanga and Aira.) But I do hate shows which seem to exist to simply pander to the lowest common denominator of moe fans (moesploitation as I call it) and forced drama bullshit like all the KyoAni key adaptations.

Great writing skills you have, and some good points….but i have to note a couple of things:
    1) Even though i hated the second part of “death note” that does not make it bad…in fact it could still be in the top 20 of the decade…..(Berserk got screwed in the last 2 episodes but still is a classic).
    2) Black Lagoon has some awesome arcs….and its just gritty fun action..though some times it feels like cowboy bebop
3)Hack//Sign i haven’t finished yet because as u said its kinda boring, but its idea is just great….lets face it who doesn’t want to enter a game world.

Was looking forward for RahXephon, blue gender, and Planetes….guess now they will have to wait…

I love this list. It’s so absolutely true. I wouldn’t put DeathNote in there only because as a whole it was awesome. But the last few episode were complete trash. And sort of ruined it as a series. But that aside, everything was perfect. I love how you pointed out that Moe is generally “entertaining” but not “good”. That’s exactly right. A lot of moe, “kawaii” shit is funny to watch, but by no means quality work

  40. May 13, 2012 at 5:19 am

I agree with this list, Black Lagoon is my exception, and well, Naruto is fun sometimes but most of the time is boring, with long speeches and the poor animation quality. What I liked more about this top is the fact that I’m not the only one who hates Lucky star and K-on, I mean, when I first saw these series I was like: WTF is awful…

  41. 52 Brandon
    July 8, 2012 at 11:34 pm

I agree wholeheartedly with you when it comes to Azumanga Daioh, although not for quite the same reasons. I couldn’t even get past the FIRST DISC! It was so god-awful and irritating as hell. I didn’t even KNOW it was ‘racist’ cuz I never got that far into the plot! However, Clannad’s really not THAT bad, nor is Kanon. I don’t know what you’re getting a hemrrhoid over them for.

However, I agree with you on K-On, for the most part. That was just plain stupid. And wtf is “light music”?? Is that some Japan-only genre? WHY WOULD YOU PUT AN UNFAMILIAR GENRE IN ENGLISH SUBTITLES, you MORON TRANSLATORS?? WESTERN and English-speaking audiences probably haven’t heard of this “light music” nonsense.

But… Genshiken? Really? I actually liked it a lot, believe it or not! And the whole “mocking otaku” sh*t which you bring up was done IN JEST! There actually were PLENTY of positive aspects of otaku culture that were presented. Besides, are you so STUPID as to not who the REAL main character was? Here’s a hint: It wasn’t Saki, and his name rhymes with “Jumanji.” You’re truly a dumbass… How does an anime about a club with what ends up being, like, SEVEN otaku and ONE otaku-hating gf of one of the members, in your view, constitute “a terrible anime that does nothing but make fun of us otaku.” Here’s $50, so go buy a f*cking clue.

Naruto, however, is just plain shit. Nothing more to say there. ANYONE who thinks it’s even REMOTELY close to, say, Dragonball Z in greatness is either smoking something or has his head up his ass. I tried watching the first few episodes of “Shippuden” (WHY don’t the dubs just translate wtf this “shippuden” word means, btw?? Naruto Shippuden is such a goofy-sounding title).

EVERYONE knows Lucky Star was pointless… but hey, I don’t think it was EVER intended to be seen as a “great story” or whatever, so you gotta give them a pass on that one. Air was OK, but I can see where you’re going with that.

Besides, WTNHK kind of sucked, tbh. I could barely get through HALF of it, and the main character’s “friends” with that one girl who KIND OF likes him but also pities him, and she’s not that interesting a person anyway. Hikikimori shit is rarely all that entertaining. Most of the time, it’s just pitiful.

I NEVER even bothered with that POS known as “.Hack.” A few months back, I DID add one of their games to my Gamefly queue, but it was just AWFUL. After, like, an hour of playing, I was SO STUCK! There was NOTHING anywhere in the game or any characters that WOULD POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION SO I COULD FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO NEXT. I was stuck in fake-MMO limbo, so to speak. And I didn’t bother to look up a strategy guide or anything because, after all, THE GAME WAS KIND OF BORING TO BEGIN WITH! No real redeeming features… Probably the worst RPG I’ve ever played.

Boy oh boy, I sure do like me some arguing over subjective opinions!

I like moe shit because that it’s funny, cute, entertaining. Story? I don’t usually care, not for moe shit anyway. I’ve watched Lucky Star 4 times because that shit’s hilarious.

I agree with Evangelion and Death Note. The Rebuild series is probably to satisfy the people who didn’t like the confusing ending of the original series and movie. It’s good, but I don’t get the depth that I see in the anime.
I watched Death note a second time, I watched all the way until L dies. It was all so exciting, up until Near and the blonde dude show up, then shit gets boring.

Some of the points you bring up, like the supposed racism in Azumanga, are just silly. The series doesn’t revolve around that at all, and only until you mentioned it here, I never associated Azumanga with racism. Also, Osaka’s amusing, that’s why I love her.

Stories by Key? While they may not have the most depth, I still think they’re very good stories. Also Clannad has no sex, except the implied sex in After Story when Nagisa and Tomoya are married and living together.

Never seen Sky Girls, and it does look shitty…but I think Strike Witches deserved a spot on the list instead. That. Show. Is. Terrible.

Azumanga Daioh…Once again, never seen it, but there’s far, far worse.

Lucky Star…OK, I can definitely see why you hate it so much (although I quite like it) but it didn’t deserve a spot on this list.

    You know why?

Kodomo no Jikan. Without a doubt the single worst anime released ever. Now, you said one of the things you hated about Lucky Star was the “paedophile pandering”. Well let me tell you, even if Lucky Star did pander to paedos (which I personally don’t think it did) Kodomo no Jikan is nothing but Lolicon fanservice and paedo pandering. The cast of Lucky Star are all around 17, and there’s very little fanservice. The main character of Kodomo no Jikan is 10 years old…and has the hots for her teacher. And I’m not talking CLAMP Cardcaptor Sakura-esque romantic, purely platonic love. She is actually sexually attracted to him. Dear god, it is terrible. The title even means “Children’s Time” which makes it that little bit worse.

You know the really sad part?

THE MANGA WAS WRITTEN BY A WOMAN.

When even women are writing Lolicon dross, you know life sucks.

Gah, I need to watch some Excel Saga.

    • March 12, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Agree with you on Strike Witches. It is decidedly awful. I actually hadn’t heard of Kodomo no Jikan. Now I know to steer clear of that one. Enjoy watching Excel Saga, it’s a good comedy series.

Are you ignorant or what? you said what’s good is not determined by subjectiveness then the opposite of that can only be objective – results and criterias. Yet, Lucky star achieved a upper tier rating with positive reviews. I assume you believe your opinions are the truth but i see it as a joke. Now im not arguring because this is the internet and it would take forever, so i wont bother to check your reply. but I felt neccessary to correct your judging of people according to the criteria of bad animes.

Finally, yes there is a clear difference between what is entertaining or good but being subjective is the reason why anyone would agree and disagree with your list – because they enjoyed it and why would anyone enjoy something that is bad? I can sum up AIR in a few sentences: Personality-less boy and clumsy cardboard cutout girl meet. Nothing awesome or memorable ever happens. And it ends with the girl dying from a made-up illness that she does nothing about. (Couldn’t the writers have researched a real one?) There, I saved the reader four long, depressing hours of mundane inaction that he will never get back.

I agree with most of the list but in the defense of Kanon and Air, the visual novels were a lot better and you could avoid some of the depressing stuff. Clannad imo doesn’t belong in this list. The story is slice of life which is boring to most people but others enjoy it and believe it or not, Clannad has a relatable and enjoyable story (Except the whole ghost and coming back to life shit). Black Lagoon’s manga is more entertaining than it’s anime counterpart. The storyline is still average though. I’m glad you put K-On and Lucky Star on this list, those shit anime are ubiquitous in the anime community all because of the shitty characters. It pisses me off since I’ve been watching anime for over 12 years and all the good old animes are never heard from again while shit like this brainwashes everyone into thinking it’s the way anime should be. Also, You should also add Melody Of Oblivion. It was an anime with great potential but near the mid point the creators screwed everything up which pissed me off because it started out interesting for me. Other than the things I mentioned, you have a great list.

I have a fun little trick I like to do most of the time for series I cant seem to finish/enjoy. I fastforward, I dont actually speed but I increase the speed on videos on my ps3 or youtube to 1.5 or 2.
If you can read quick or can pay attention to the fast dialogue then it works quite well. For me anyhow.
I recommend it even though few do it. Its much better than chipmunk voice or actually fast forwarding anyway.

I will be honest and say I have not seen most of the shows on this list. However, there are a couple I don’t agree with, while Death Note did go downhill near the end, I think the earlier episodes are so impressive the show should not be on the worst list for the last half. I also don’t agree with .hack//SIGN. I know a lot of people find the show boring, however I think a lot of people went into it expecting an action series. The show is more of a dementia or psychological series like Lain or Paranoia Agent. There is a lot of standing and talking but what they are saying is actually quite important to the story. The show really impressed me on a multitude of levels, because it definitely said a lot about online gaming and escapism. Tsukasa is a character who uses The World as a form of escapism from his real life, which is shown in the series to be cold and abusive. Hence the black and white imagery, while The World is beautiful and colorful. The music is also fantastic. It’s actually one of my favorite shows from the 2000s.

I will tell you the ones I do agree with, Blue Gender was not that great. I don’t know about it being one of the worst series, but there was definitely more of an emphasis on sex and violence rather than the storytelling, because the show has a lot of character inconsistencies and later on really stupid plot points. Naruto is also not that good, the show starts out decent with the Land of Waves Arc, but the protagonist is so annoying, and after the Land of Waves Arc the pacing becomes rather bad, and the fights are completely idiotic like Naruto winning a fight by farting. It does later on get better, but then they decide to load on 80 episode filler and all of it is really bad. While I have not finished Black Lagoon yet, I am not a big fan of it. I think it is okay, but the pedestal people put it on is a bit too high. It is not nearly as action packed as they say it is, the characters are a bit lacking at this point. It is sometimes fun to watch, but I think it is too overly edgy for its own good.

Overall your list was not too bad, I do want to get to watching some of those shows to see if I agree with you on them or not.

I thought I would have loved and never forgot RahXephon. Sure it did have mecha fights and explosions, but the execution was totally unmemorable. Honestly, even the least actiony episodes of MLP: FiM had more going on than half the whole of RahXephon.

Sweet Celestia, if you dislike Air, Kanon, and Clannad, you ought to be watching POWER RANGERS where the action is!

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has FAR better role models for little girls than Air, Kanon, and Clannad do. The latter three shows teach girls to be helpless and immature, and rely on a bland male protagonist to solve everything. But MLP teaches girls to be brave and strong, stand up for what is right, and never underestimate the power of friendship. Not to mention that MLP’s Twilight Sparkle is one HUGE Badass Mother Bucker.

It is no wonder that MLP’s fans tend to exaggerate the cast’s badassery and connect it to every form of pop culture known to man, whereas fans of Air, Kanon, and Clannad can only say they cried.

    • September 6, 2014 at 1:49 pm

I haven’t watched MLP:FIM, but people seem to really like it. I’m glad to hear it’s better than most of the moe garbage that’s been produced over the last decade.

        September 7, 2014 at 12:18 pm

You really ought to watch MLP. You can watch it on Hub Network or Dailymotion. The characters are complex and grow regularly, and lots of exciting action actually takes place. It has made my laugh, cry, and smile, without ever making me want to kill myself. Once you get to certain parts of certain episodes, the badass fan art (especially the crossovers) will make sense. Don’t be embarrassed for watching this show – although it’s aimed towards little girls, it’s compatible with both genders, any age group, and fans of any genre.

Just don’t watch Equestria Girls. It’s 95% filler. To quote IMDB: “…5 minutes of ponies talking, 1 hour of “High School Musical”-style filler, 5 minutes of antagonist revelation and fighting (One episode of Power Rangers had more of that), 10 minutes of ponies talking, credits.”

You’re right. Naruto is the standard all anime should live up to. And I plan to spend hundreds of millions of dollars writing hundreds of episodes of repetitive garbage, and then let people pull their pants down over me so they can “literally shit on” me as you so eloquently said. Thank you for being so respectful.

you make a lot of valid points but I am goint to have to disagree with two points. One is Lucky Star, that was a slice of life. There is no plot, no character developement it is just a few highschoolers living their lives. I will also argue on Black Lagoon. This anime is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. The thing is the points you bring up are bad and make no sense. The second season was not as good as the first season for sure, but Rock (the main character) has smoked since the very first episode so that point is completly invalid. The characters are developed well and Roberta in OVA’s is especially well done. Her descent into madness and the look into her was very interesting. I am glad you think that DeatH Note was bad because it definantly got really bad towards the end. All in All I think this was very well done except for my two points that I just made.

I pretty much agree with your list… then I saw Aria and Planetes on the list.

    Really?… I mean… REALLY?

As much as I hate ‘moe-shit’ as you call it, I actually adore Aria. Both doesn’t focus on ‘oh my god this so exciting’ genre, so I pretty much guessed that there would be much hate.

People are hating on Aria because ‘there’s nothing happening in Aria’. What they doesn’t think of is that it is the objective. It is to soothe and relaxes people who’s watching it.

Both anime I mentioned above are actually good, both focuses on characters growth and the characters are relatable.

Well… if you like fast paced, thrilling and action-packed animes, both anime is not for you.

On the Blue Gender anime I disagree with your view empty and vacant it was not, it is an awesome anime with a cool plot.

The Naruto anime does drag on for way too long and I also wanted KIra in Death Note to win that would have a more interesting ending.

moe is shit yeah but u sir have no idea of what a story or characters are and i dotn think any of these animes belong into the top worst of the least decate (maybe except one or two but doubt it) they are far worse anime and u dumb ass even listet some realy good anime like death note (yeah second arc was pretty dumb but still better then 90% of regular anime shit) and blue gender (i also heard towards the terra should be good)

two of the stronges things in blue gender are the story and the characters

u are jsut a idiot who thinks the story is bad because the pacing was too slow and im sure u think the characters are bad because YOU dont like them like a blind fool (they had well made personality solid background a good development and nice moments of catharsis they are GOOD even if they are not very likeable)

u are not much better than these moe fucktards u are just another kind of stupid

I watched all of RahXephon a thousand years ago, and now I don’t remember any names except for the main character’s. I only recall his name because his flipping last name is Kamina (from the far superior Gurren Lagann). Meanwhile, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has a billion more characters and it’s much easier to remember all their names. I’m so excited for MLP: FiM’s sixth season this may! I highly doubt RahXephon has a future…

“Fuck you fans of (blank) and his work! I’m unable to say anything without sounding like a immature brat that can’t handle other’s opinions!” I don’t even particularly like Mamoru Oshii but your pointlessly aggressive tone just makes you sound immature.

Also the way you describe Clannad makes you sound like you barely watched the show, as not only is there pretty much no fan service shown in this show, and the characters are not sexualized in any way, the story of Clannad had pretty much everything to do with the very slow relationship between two people and almost nothing to do with ANYTHING sexual.

Slice of Life anime is my favorite anime ever. In normal anime it’s a story of how the protagonist defeats the antagonists. You know that the protagonist is going to win so the conflict doesn’t matter – it’s just there to waste time. Slice of Life on the other hand is pure. It’s about personalities interacting with each other about situations, without any of the fakeness of good versus evil tinging every interaction.

    • August 27, 2016 at 6:59 am

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. But I find this to be a very naieve/unnaunced approached to storytelling. Slice of life anime tells no story. Anime with actual plots must attempt something more difficult. It certainly is not all good versus evil. Tell me, who is the hero and villain of “Serial Experiments Lain” or “Madoka Magica” or “Paranoia Agent?” And you certainly can’t say the conflict of “Evangelion” doesn’t matter, because did the protagonist win? That’s debatable. Those are the kinds of anime I love. When it’s just people sitting around doing stuff I could do in real life, I don’t see the point in it. I want some element of fantasy.

It’s very obvious that this list was made by either a troll, or someone who has taste in only action anime or anime that is just engaging and non comedy. I believe it’s the former, because there is nothing wrong with slice of life or moe, just because you do not enjoy it does not make it automatically shitty

I’m going to have to say that you haven’t actually watched some of these anime that you’ve reviwed. Take Blue Gender for example. You say that here isn’t a plot when in fact there is, and a really good one too. The character development between the two main characters is probably some of the best I’ve seen. This isn’t “violence porn” in any way shape or fashion. You might want to stick to reading manga, your idea of real art and anime are simply nonexistent.

    Thanks for the laugh.
